Pibella?

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if any of you have tested Pibella? I'm considering buying one, as I'll be spending part of my vacation camping and generally run across filthy toilet seats quite often, especially in trains. Eek.

I thought that because some of us are into using environmentally friendly things (this Pibella seems more so than a plastic/paper bag which is disposed of after usage), maybe someone might've tried it?
And it just seems so brilliant that I really want to try it, lol.

The link is here http://www.pibella.com/47622/47664.html (mods: if I'm not allowed to post it, sorry - just remove it then. Thanks!)

Thanks and Happy New Year!!!

question

Has any experienced intense vaginal itch that lasted several weeks? I'm talking the kind that keeps me bedridden.  I'm on diflucan, though my yeast is gone, and heavy does of steroids I just started.  All tests, except yeast, came back negative. I'm 49, hormonal/perimenopausal and in terrible pain.  I'm using vagisil and linocane for the itch.  I'm terrified this itch will never go away.

augmentin affecting birth control effectiveness

Does anyone have any real evidence that augmentin -an antibiotic i have to take for 11 days, really does decrease the effectiveness of my birth control? Ive seen quite a few people post answers saying that most antibiotics dont really effect birthcontrol..

prolonged effects of HBC after use

http://www.webmd.com/sex/birth-control/news/20060103/less-sexual-desire-after-pill

Anyone have any more information about this? I've been wondering about this for about a year now. I got off the pill for about 4 months and my sex drive still did not return. I talked to my doctor about this and she said there was no evidence of the pill causing prolonged libido problems after taking it, so I got back on it. This is incredibly frustrating and there really should be more studies involving this. :(

Get Rich Slowly’s Greatest Hits (2009 Edition)

This past year was one of transition at Get Rich Slowly.

In January, I was shocked by the sudden death of one of my best friends. This loss forced me to re-examine my life priorities. For years, I’d made money my focus, and now I realized there were more important things to worry about, including my relationships and my health.

As a result, I spent six months working behind the scenes to make big changes around here. Most of these aren’t apparent (or relevant) to you, but they’re important to me. Making these changes lets me focus on what’s really important in life while also setting me up for good things in the future.

The most visible change was bringing on April and Baker as staff writers. With each of them contributing an article a week (and guest writers contributing a third), I’ve been able to find time to get other things done.

One of these “other things” is writing my first book. Your Money: The Missing Manual is scheduled to hit bookstores in March. It’s nearly finished now, though, and I’m proud of what I’ve put together. I’ve taken some of the best bits from Get Rich Slowly, and then wrapped it in tons of brand-new stuff. It may never be a best seller, and it most certainly will never make me rich (slowly or otherwise), but it’s got some damn good info, and I hope it’ll help a lot of people.

My goal for 2010 is for Get Rich Slowly to continue to be an excellent place for readers to share their journeys as they learn about personal finance. As part of this, there’ll be a new weekly “reader stories” feature (which starts this Sunday!), and the GRS forums will get a makeover.

The best of 2009
Today, however, I’d like to share some of the best articles from the past twelve months. I looked at the top 25 most-visited stories that I wrote for Get Rich Slowly in 2009. From these, I picked my ten favorite, which I’ve listed below in no particular order.

  • 7 tips for starting your own vegetable garden: “It might seem crazy to start thinking about a vegetable garden in January. It’s cold outside! But believe it or not, now is the perfect time to begin preparing for a successful autumn harvest.”
  • How to build confidence and destroy fear: “To say ‘no’ is to live in fear. My goal is to continually improve myself, to become better than I am today. One way to do that is to do the things that scare me, to take them on as challenges, and to learn from them — even if I fail.”
  • The secrets of financial freedom: An interview with the millionaire next door: “John’s story was popular with Get Rich Slowly readers, and many of you asked me to interview him. I had to wait for him to return from New Zealand, but earlier this month, the opportunity finally presented itself. John agreed to sit down for a chat.”
  • Negotiating your salary: How to make $1,000 a minute: “Those few minutes in an interview during which you ask for what you’re worth can make a difference of tens of thousands of dollars over your lifetime. Maybe hundreds of thousands. You can literally earn $1,000 a minute if you do this right.”
  • Good-bye, Microsoft Money! 16 powerful personal finance programs: “As of today, Microsoft Money is no longer available for purchase. Microsoft has essentially conceded that there’s no demand for the product…Here are 16 powerful personal finance programs to take the place of Microsoft Money.”
  • How I cut my television bill in half: “None of these is going to satisfy those who truly enjoy television. If you must see your show right now, or if you’re a fan of live sports, you may have to fork over the dough for a deluxe cable package. I’m content to wait. It saves me money, and it lets me watch shows on my terms.”
  • How to stop buying clothes you never wear (by staff writer April Dykman): “These are the best tips I picked up while going through the process [of cleaning my closets], gleaned from fashion gurus, designers, and style bloggers. These tips are applicable to women and men, whether you’re a high-power attorney or a stay-at-home parent.”
  • CD (certificate of deposit) rates at online banks: “[Like savings accounts], CD rates have also fallen, but remain high in some corners. For those hoping to eke the best return from their cash reserves, CDs could be a great choice. To make the savings die-hards happy, I did some research on current CD rates from popular online banks. Here’s what I found.”
  • The lazy way to investment success: “While researching investment strategies for my retirement savings, I’ve been reading a lot of books. There are hundreds of authors offering thousands of tips for turning a small pile of gold into a big pile of gold. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell whose advice to heed.”
  • The razor’s edge: Lessons in true wealth: “Our friends have a profound effect on our personal finance habits. Some friends can lead us to spending and to debt. Others offer insight into the virtues of thrift. For me, my friend Sparky has been the latter. Through his example, I learned that frugality can help me achieve my goals.” From my perspective, this is the single most important post at GRS in the past year. You may not realize it, but this changed everything.

Though I enjoy sharing my experiences with money, I also love being able to bring you the voices of other writers. I learn a lot from the guest authors at Get Rich Slowly, and I hope you do, too. Here are my five favorite guest posts from 2009. Each is a gem.

  • Why I drive a 13-year-old car (by GRS reader Joel Berry): “I recently had a talk with a friend about why I haven’t purchased a new car. He can’t understand why I still drive a 1995 Geo Prizm. I can afford to buy a new car, but I choose not to. The fact is, driving an older car saves me money! To prove my point, I ran some numbers. I was surprised by how much money I’ve saved by driving this car for so long.”
  • Five steps to six figures in seven years (by FMF of Free Money Finance): “How can you get into the six-figure club? There are many roads to this golden path (lottery, inheritance, take over a family business, etc.), but many, if not all, of these are out of your control. As such, I’m going to focus on what I consider to be the method that will give the most people the greatest chance of earning $100k or more — by developing a career and growing it over time.”
  • 5 credit-card company tricks — and how to thwart them (by Justin McHenry, president of Index Credit Cards): “Credit cards ain’t for fools. If you’re going to carry one, then take responsibility for understanding what you’re getting into, and fight fire with fire when your card company decides to play rough.”
  • How to buy a mattress (by a mattress salesman named Justin): “If a store is willing to negotiate mattress prices, then they are overpriced, so make sure you get them down a considerable amount. Mattress manufactures contractually set minimum prices that they allow retailers to sell their mattresses at, so they either have to price them at that minimum or overprice them and negotiate.”
  • The psychology of passive barriers: Why your friends don’t save money, eat healthier, or clean their garage (by Ramit Sethi from I Will Teach You to Be Rich): “Getting people to change their behavior is extraordinarily hard — even if it will save them thousands of dollars or save their lives…None of us are perfect. That’s why understanding barriers is so important to changing your own behavior.”

And, of course, I just finished a 14-part series that explored my personal financial philosophy. These are the ideas behind every post at Get Rich Slowly:

short irregular period?

I don't know if this is just my body being really irregular or what, but i got what i assumed was my period ten days ago, i think on dec 21st, which was more than a week early by my count, and usually i'm around 27 to 30 day girl, so it definately caught me by surprise, normally i wouldn't expect my period until like today. I had pretty regular period like cramps, bright red bleeding, absolutely nothing dark or clotty, the latter of which is more normal for me. it only stuck around for two days. if that. and then disappeared. typically, my periods last between 4 to 6 days.

Now i'm not on any HBC, and the only method we use is withdrawl. my partner and I had sex in the days prior to me getting my 'period'. what i'm worried about is that maybe this was actually implantation bleeding. but everything i've read describes implantation bleeding as very light spotting. I wouldn't describe this as spotting. I don't know whats going on. and to make things worse i woke up this morning with more period like cramps and feeling generally like crap. like i was going to start my period. so now i'm just baffled. although i haven't started yet.

whats going on? oh and just for details once again, i'm 24, not on BC, not using condoms, and wondering if implantation bleeding can be experienced as more than just light spotting. or if my body is just being crazy. i've never been this irregular.

PREGNANCY RELATED MAYBE?

For the last week or so I have been having these really weird feelings in my lower abdomen/pelvic region. The best way I can describe it is a tightening, then pushing/pulling feeling, and sometimes a slight fluttery feeling. I have had my period since I was 13 and have never had this feeling, so I don't think it's just PMS related. It is not painful in anyway, just really weird. The people I described it to said that's exactly what a baby kicking around feels like. I have had a completely normal 28 day cycle wrt my period since the last time I had sex, and I have ALWAYS, without fail, been completely on schedule as far as my periods go. I had 2 negative pregnancy tests, so I'm pretty positive this isn't a pregnancy. I'm just wondering what else this feeling could be? I don't have insurance, so I don't just wanna go to the doctor if this isn't anything serious at all( and really my only options at this point would be ER/Urgent Care.) Also just FYI I DO NOT cannot stress enough DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT WANT TO BE PREGNANT (so it's really not just wishful thinking/hoping/etc.) I'm just at a loss, because every symptom I google comes up with something pregnancy related.

Vertical Hood Piercing (VCH)

First, I just wanted to say thank you to those kind ppl who answered my last question. Based on the responses, I have given a lot of thought to getting a VCH piercing. I've done a lot of research and looked at a lot of pictures but I'd like to know what you guys think about it. What was the experience like? Did it enhance your sensitivity? Was it worth the money/trouble?

Anything you're willing to share about getting your VCH piercing would really go a long way towards helping me make my decision. Thanks so much!

Herpes question.

So as posted a while ago I recently found out I have HSV. What I need to know is that, generally, are sores kind of roundish?
I'm still trying to figure out when I'm having an outbreak and I think I may be having one now. I have an open cut on my perineum, where sores have happened twice before since I've had HSV.  It looks more like a tear than something that swelled and then opened (as far as I understand this is what happens? something like a blister that then opens up?) .
Basically I don't want to use my Zovirax if this isn't an outbreak, as I cannot afford to misuse it.

Also. There needs to be a facebook version of VP too. All in favor?

Second Depo Shot

I posted a few days ago about getting the depo provera shot a day early. I decided to just reschedule the appointment to tomorrow. I have a new series of questions though. When I get my next shots do I get an examination each time? I should only need the full examination once a year, right? I basically want to know if I should shave my legs in preparation of the stirrups or not. :) Also, do I take a pregnancy test before the shot is given? Thanks!

Negative pregancy test + soreness

Ok, so, I'm desperately in need of some advice/opinions, whatever.

So, I was stupid. I had unprotected sex on the 20th, 22nd, and the 23rd of December. I wasn't on birth control at the time. My period is due any time now (it usually gets here around the last week of the month). I went to the local health department and took a pregnancy test which was negative. They said that if I don't get my period in the next two weeks that I should take another. What are the chances that it was too soon to register on the stick if I am pregnant? Has anyone had this happen?

Also, they said I have a UTI, but I don't have any of the usual symptoms (and I've had a UTI before) however my vag feels sore and kinda irritated. Like when you have rough sex with no lubrication. But it's been days and we didn't have rough or unlubricated sex so it doesn't make any sense. Is soreness a rare UTI symptom or could I possibly have something else? Please give me some peace of mind here; I'm going crazy.

Oh, and I don't know if this matters but I'm 19. Thanks in advance!

Oral sex sweeteners

Just wondering... So people say that eating fruits, especially pineapples, can make you taste sweeter, thus probably making oral sex more enjoyable. (I say "probably" 'cause I haven't tried it yet; haven't received it, haven't given it. But I'm pretty sure you can cross that "probably" out of the sentence...) Anyway, I was just wondering: how long before having said sex should you have eaten the "sweeteners"?

Oh, and other than pineapples: any other suggestions that can have the same sweetening effect? I myself love pineapples, so it won't be any problem incorporating them into my diet, but I'd like to have a wider variety of options... I know alcohol, caffeine and asparagus are big no-nos.

Thanks in advance, as always.

pregnancy worries..

Alright, starting off. Im just a generally really paranoid person to begin with so hopefully this is just me driving myself crazy and not anything really to be worried about.

I Had sex towards the end of november and when my boyfriend pulled out after he came the condom was still in my vagina. I kind of freaked but since he has a genetic disorder we figure he probably isnt the most potent. I forget the exact date now but it was right after my period ended and so I calculated it wasn't in my most fetrile period.

So I was supposed to get my period the 27th. It was a bit late so I started to freak and have been stressing about this whole thing. I ended up getting it this morning and thought I could breathe a sigh of relief, but my period is a lot lighter than it usually is, especially on the first day. The cramps have been really awful and I have a terrible headache. I havent really had any symptoms of pregnancy other than moodyness and peeing all the time. But thats not that rare for me haha.

So what do you guys think? Am I pregnant or just driving myself crazy? Hearing about "i didnt know I was pregnant" stories are making it worse. heh. Regardless I plan to buy a pee test tommorrow but I figured posting here would help me calm down

Itchy rash-like bumps. And how to get rid of them?!

Hello VP'ers. I am having lady-part woes. About a week ago, my labia area started itching. I scratched (bad, bad idea) and irritated it more. Then decided maybe shaving would help and am now noticing that I have rash-like bumps and redness all over my labia/inner thighs. I don't know if the bumps are related to shaving or the itching, but here are some facts:

-Am on NuvaRing
-Had unprotected sex 3 months ago
-Have some whitish/slightly yellow discharge
-Took my NuvaRing out tonight and there was thicker white discharge on the ring
-Vagina started itching while I was on a cruise (this is probably completely unrelated, but who knows?!)

Anyway, I am hoping this is just irritation from shaving/soap/the scratching/etc. and that it will clear up by Saturday (when I plan to have sexy-time with my bf)... If it's just irritation, any tips to make it go away faster? Or could it be something else?

Fixing botched month of BCP

Hello, Everyone.

I just had a quick question about fixing the timing of my birth control. I take Alesse28 for the record.

Here's the sitch. I normally take my pill 11am everyday. I just finished up my sugar pill week and was supposed to start my new pack on Sunday 11am. Due to an unfortunate set of circumstances, I was unable to start on time. The first time I was able to take a pill was Tuesday evening. Now, I know that my protection is compromised until I have taken seven active pills, that's not a problem, and my boyfriend and I are using backup. I took two pills on Tuesday, and have been taking one a day since, and I'm thinking that in order to maintain my protection further on I just need to keep taking them once a day till the end of the pack and then if I wanted to keep my cycle the same I could just start the new one on the Sunday instead of waiting until the Tuesday start its moved to.

Does this make sense?

Is there a better way to do this. Basically I'm concerned with keeping a Sunday start day, and maintaining protection with this pack of pills going forward, and I'm thinking if I stop with the one extra pill left over then I won't have taken the full 21 days worth and will lose that months protection.

Any help you guys can give me, I would really appreciate.

Taking sugar pills early?

Hi everyone, I checked the tags and didn't see this question posted...hopefully it hasn't already been answered!

I take Yaz as a form of birth control and, since I am home away from college, decided to begin taking my sugar pills a few days early so that I wouldn't have my period when I returned to school for classes.  Normally I begin my period two days after I take the sugar pills, but I am almost through the third day and I have yet to start.   I'm wondering if starting my period early (5 or more days) is throwing off the rhythm of my cycle or if I should be concerned about pregnancy?

Getting Started with Asset Allocation

This is a guest post from Dylan Ross, a certified financial planner and a long-time GRS reader.

If you’re new to investing, recognize the merits of using low-cost index funds, but you’re not sure how to allocate your long-term savings among various types of index funds, this information is for you.

Asset allocation basics
While there are many ways to divide investment assets into different categories, there are two main classifications: stocks and bonds.

Here’s what you need to know: Stocks are riskier but have the potential for higher rewards compared with bonds. Also, stocks and bonds don’t always move up or down together. That’s it. That’s enough info to get you started. There’s plenty more to learn about stocks and bonds if you want, but you needn’t wait any longer to start investing.

The starter asset allocation
If you’re just getting started, here’s a fine way to allocate your funds until you’re ready to make things more complex:

  • 60% in a total US stock market index fund
  • 40% in a total US bond market index fund

The biggest criticism I hear over this approach is that it’s too conservative for younger investors and to aggressive for older investors. My response: Then change it to 80% stocks/20% bonds (for young investors) or 40% stocks/60% bonds (for older investors) if that’s the conclusion you’ve reached.

Another criticism is that there’s no international (or emerging markets, REITs, TIPS, or whatever else you like). Okay, so add them if you want and can satisfy fund minimums. Use the starter allocation as a starting point. As your knowledge, understanding, and comfort level increase, feel free to make changes.

If you’re just starting out without a lot of money, the greatest influence on your account balance will not come from your asset allocation; it will be your own contributions. If having 20% in international stocks would have earned you an extra half percent on your $5,000 portfolio your, you missed out on $25. (And it could just as easily cost you half a percent, in which case you saved $25.)

When your balance is small, what you contribute matters more than what you contribute to. You may even reach the conclusion that the 60/40 starter allocation is works for you long-term.

If you don’t have enough money saved to meet the minimum investments, then save in a high-yield savings account until you do. (For example, you can implement the starter allocation using VBINX with $3,000.)

Next steps
Once you have more money invested for longer periods of time, asset allocation decisions become more significant. Just keep in mind that increased stock market exposure doesn’t always mean a greater chance of achieving your financial goals. The added risk of additional stock may work against you, and in some cases can decrease you chances of achieving your financial goals. I’m not talking about market volatility; I’m talking about the very real chance of experiencing a less favorable, long-term outcome.

From here, you can continue to educate yourself about the effect of asset allocation on your own financial goals and priorities, or you can seek some help from a professional. And by seek some help from a professional, I’m not necessarily talking about having them manage your money; you can hire a financial planner just to recommend an appropriate asset allocation for you that you can implement yourself.

Previously at Get Rich Slowly, Dylan has written When and how to hire a financial planner, What is a financial plan (and why have one?), How lower fees and expenses with index funds could mean 33% more to spend in retirement.
